Unfortunately the problem is back.. but a bit different
The global volume mixer now lowers all channels in 5.1 but the middle speaker.. So if I lower the volume, all goes off but the middle speaker remains on 100.. I can see this when opening balance in the properties of my realtec digital output. All sliders move but speaker 3 (middle speaker) when changing the global volume.
Any guesses.. ? Now. Uninstalling and re-installing does not help..

I'm having this same issue, but nothing fixes it.
I've uninstalled the drivers, deleted them from my computer, and restarted to reinstall from scratch.
When I go into the Speaker Properties of my sound device (a Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio) and go to the Levels tab, I find the volume is linked to the balance sliders.
If I move the volume, the balance moves too.

Zyxel firmware downloads software. I could imagine that it is easy to fix. Allowing the main volume mixer to change the level of all output speakers of one output device seems trivial to me..
But then again.. I have no idea about drivers and maybe just registry entries..

I have the same problem. Selecting the device and changing the number of channels sometimes works to reset it, but in a lot of cases it comes back soon thereafter.
I also see some really weird behavior in the dialog box for balance -- if you mute and open the dialog, everything shows in dB rating and isn't editable. It also sometimes shows dB rating instead of the 0/100 number when you're not muted and I can't quite figure out why. Sometimes I can't drag any of the sliders until I close and re-open the dialog a few times.
All in all, the actual balance dialog itself seems somewhat buggy.
For reference, I've got an ASUS Motherboard with the Realtek HD Audio chipset. I'm running it out over HDMI to my receiver (which, though I doubt it matters, is a Denon AVR-3310CI)

I have the same issue. The OS is coming up to a year old soon and still no fix for such a basic PC requirement on such a widely used driverset. I'm an audio producer and this situation is absurd. Digital optical output is the most effected.
Often the volume mixer does nothing at all. Other times it will suddenly kick up the volume to 100% of it's own accord. Sometimes decreasing the volume will inexplicably shift the balance away from centre and to the left, with the only way to return it to centre by increasing the volume again.
So, basically windows 10 in this configuration has no volume control. I am reliant upon an external 5.1 amplifier to increase and decrease my volume control.
This sucks and gives the whole OS the feel of still being in a public beta.

it's now April, and I have been updating my sound drivers as often as they are released. but the problem still isn't fixed.
only way around it is to set the sound to default stereo. and reboot.
then switch it to 5.1 and pray it is good, other wise switch it back to stereo and reboot again.
I don't let my machine sleep since on wake up it is messed up again.
using RealTec HD sound drivers via digital optical out.
any help for a more permeant fix would be great.
